Freeride is the European and British word for what this page is about: riding the mountain as it is, at pitch, at speed, choosing your own line down open faces and through couloirs and gullies. North Americans and Kiwis will find the same terrain described in our backcountry vocabulary, and the off-piste page covers the rules and the risk framework rather than the terrain.

Gulmarg's freeride terrain is unusual in that its steepest, most committing lines are lift-accessed. No approach, no climb, no permit gate. That makes it extraordinarily good value in vertical terms and extraordinarily easy to get in over your head.

This page is about the terrain itself: what the lines are, how steep they get, what the consequence profile of each is, and how a line gets chosen. It is the most technical page on this site and it assumes you can already ski.

Thirteen hundred metres of continuous lift-served vertical is a genuinely large descent by any standard, and it is available repeatedly in a day. That figure, more than any other, is what freeride skiers should be calibrating on.

The terrain, by pitch and consequence

Consequence and pitch are separate axes and Gulmarg separates them unusually clearly. Several lines here are steeper than they are dangerous, and several are far more dangerous than they are steep. Confusing the two is the most common error visiting skiers make.

Open faces off the ridge, Sustained, wide, and the introduction to what the mountain does. Consistent fall line, no terrain traps of consequence, enough width to choose a line rather than follow one. This is where a guide assesses whether a group is ready for what's below.

Main Gondola Bowl, Visible from the lift, moderate by the standards of what's around it, and useful for exactly that reason. A line you can be watched on.

Looker's Left & Right, The names most people arrive knowing, and the ones most often written down wrong. (It is Looker's, named from the perspective of someone at the bottom looking up, not "Lockers," and not a single gully.) Sustained steep pitch with a confined feel that changes how a fall behaves. Not technically the hardest thing here, but the least forgiving of a mistake, because the terrain doesn't give you room to recover.

Shark Fin, The steepest named line on this mountain, and the one with the smallest margin. Guided only, stable days only, groups we've already skied with. If an operator offers you Shark Fin on day one without having watched you ski, that is information about the operator.

Great White, Neighbouring, serious, with its own entrance problem.

The Doggy Chutes, Confined, technical, and the kind of terrain where line choice at the top determines whether the whole descent works.

The Back, Longer, more remote in feel, north-facing, and the best snow-holding terrain on the mountain. The commitment is the exit rather than the pitch, which is the single most common miscalculation here: skiers assess it on pitch, find it moderate, and don't account for where it puts them.

Far Far Side, Big, long, and well away from the resort. An all-day objective with a real consequence profile, ridden only on stable days.

Sunshine Peak, A distinct objective with a different aspect and a different timing window from the ridge lines.

The Drang descent, Off the Apharwat ridge and down toward Drang village, with vertical that dwarfs a normal lift lap. Guided only, weather and stability dependent, and one of the genuinely memorable descents anywhere in the Himalaya. It also commits you to an exit and a road pickup, which means it is planned the night before, not decided on the ridge.

Freeride is a decision-making sport

The thing that separates a good freeride skier from a fast one is how they choose. Every line here is a series of questions asked before you drop.

Where does this face wind-load, and did it load last night? What's underneath the new snow on this aspect? If this slope releases, where does the debris go, and is there a gully or a cliff band below to catch it? Where's my safe zone, and can I actually get to it? Who's watching me from where? If I fall at the top of this, where do I stop?

Our guides walk clients through that assessment out loud rather than just pointing at a line and saying "go." Skiers who come here for a week and pay attention leave able to make better decisions on their home mountain, which is worth more than the runs.

The five questions, in the order they actually get asked

  1. What is the slope angle, at the steepest point, not the average? A face that averages 32° and has a 40° roll at the top is a 40° problem. Averages are how people talk themselves into things.

  2. What is below? Terrain traps: gullies, benches, cliff bands, creek beds, determine whether a small slide is an inconvenience or a burial. A 30° slope above a gully is more dangerous than a 38° slope that runs out cleanly onto a flat apron.

  3. What is the aspect, and what has the sun and wind done to it today and this week? Not this morning. This week. The layer that matters was built during the clear spell four days ago.

  4. What is the group's actual capability under pressure? Not on a groomer. On this pitch, in this snow, tired, at 3,800 m, with a consequence below them. Everybody skis worse in that combination than they do at home, and the size of the gap varies enormously between people.

  5. What is the exposure time, and can we reduce it? One at a time, from island of safety to island of safety, with a spotter, cuts the exposure of the group by a factor of the group size. It also takes four times as long, which is why it has to be planned into the day rather than decided on the slope.

What "one at a time" actually means

Visitors nod at this and then don't do it, so it's worth spelling out. One skier on the slope at a time. Everyone else waiting in a position that is genuinely out of the runout, not merely off to the side. The waiting skiers watching the skiing one, continuously, with eyes on them, not chatting, not adjusting gear, not filming. A designated last-seen point if visibility is marginal. Regroup at a location chosen before the descent, not wherever people happen to stop.

On a busy day on a European face, almost nobody does this. Here, on the serious lines, it is not optional, and it is a large part of why the days are slower and the descents fewer than a fit group expects.

A worked example: deciding whether to ski Looker's

Abstract frameworks are easy to write. Here is the same reasoning applied to one specific line, on a specific kind of day, so you can see what the answer actually depends on.

It is late January. Forty centimetres fell over two days and the storm cleared overnight. It is the first blue day in four. Everyone in Gulmarg wants to ski Looker's, and the group in front of us has been talking about it since the airport.

What we know before we leave. The storm arrived relatively warm and finished cold, which is the better of the two sequences. Ridge-top wind was moderate from the west overnight. Before this storm there had been nine clear cold days, which is long enough to have built a faceted layer near the old surface, the exact layer this new load now sits on.

What that means for aspect. Westerly wind loads easterly and north-easterly features. Looker's sits in the part of the mountain that catches that loading. So the aspect that held the best cold snow before the storm is also the aspect most likely to have been loaded by it.

What we do about it. We don't go there first. The morning starts on an open, moderate, wind-scoured face where we can see how the new snow is bonding without committing to anything. We dig, we look at the interface between the new snow and the old surface, and we watch what the sluff does on a 33° pitch with no consequence below it.

Three outcomes from that observation. If the new snow is bonding poorly to the old faceted surface, Looker's is off for today and probably for two more days, and we ski trees and open lower-angle terrain instead. If it's bonding well and the wind loading turns out to be modest, we look at Looker's in the afternoon after the group has warmed up, one at a time, with a spotter. If it's ambiguous, which is the most common outcome, we ski something adjacent with a cleaner runout and reassess tomorrow.

What we tell the group. All of it, out loud, at the morning briefing. Including the part where the answer is "probably not today, and here's what would change that." Groups who understand the reasoning accept the answer. Groups who are only told the answer spend the day feeling cheated.

That is the whole service, described honestly. Not access to a famous line, access to somebody who can tell you which day is the right day for it, and who is prepared to say it isn't today.

Progression: getting from strong piste skier to this terrain

A common and reasonable question from people who ski well but have never skied anything like this.

Stage one, variable snow at moderate pitch. Before pitch, before consequence, you need to be genuinely comfortable when the snow surface changes underfoot without warning. Crust to soft, soft to wind board, deep to scoured. Most piste skiers, however strong, have limited experience of the surface changing three times in one turn. Monkey Hill and the lower ridge shoulders are where this gets built here.

Stage two, sustained descents. Not one good turn, forty of them without stopping. Long-descent fitness is a separate quality from technique and it is the thing that breaks down first at altitude.

Stage three, pitch without consequence. Steep terrain with a clean, open runout. The open faces off the ridge exist for exactly this. You learn what your skiing does at 35–38° in a place where being wrong is embarrassing rather than serious.

Stage four, consequence. Only now do the confined lines make sense. The confinement, not the pitch, is what makes Looker's and the Doggy Chutes serious, and confinement is the last variable to add.

Most visitors can move through stages one to three inside a week here, which is one of the underrated things about the mountain: the terrain is arranged in a way that makes the progression natural rather than requiring a jump.

What the terrain asks of you

Skis. 100 mm+ underfoot, freeride or big-mountain shape. Stiff enough to hold a line at speed in variable snow. A soft powder ski that is wonderful in cold smoke gets overwhelmed in the denser snow lower down and in anything wind-affected.

Fitness. Sustained descents at 3,000 to 4,000 m altitude, six to eight hours on the hill, repeated over consecutive days. The altitude is the multiplier most people underestimate.

Ability. Confident on steep ungroomed terrain in variable snow. Not "I've done a black run in France." The relevant test is whether you can make a controlled turn on a 38° slope in unpredictable snow while tired, with something below you that matters.

Sluff management. In deep cold snow on sustained pitch, what you release travels with you. Knowing to ski to the side of your own sluff, and where to stop so it passes below you, is a technique many strong piste skiers have never needed.

Safety kit. Transceiver, shovel, probe minimum. Airbag pack recommended on the steeper lines. All issued or available from our ski shop.

Honesty at the briefing. The single thing that most improves the terrain you get offered.

How a freeride week is built

Days one and two are assessment and altitude. Lower-consequence terrain, open faces, moderate pitch, enough for the guide to see how you actually move and enough for you to adapt to skiing at this height. Nobody enjoys hearing this and everybody benefits from it.

Days three to five are the core, if the snowpack allows. This is where the named lines come in, in an order determined by stability and aspect rather than by ambition.

Day six or seven is where the big objective sits, if the week has produced one, Far Far Side, the Drang descent, or a Shark Fin day. It sits there because it requires the guide to know the group and the group to be acclimatised, and because the biggest objective should not be attempted on tired legs at the very end.

Some weeks never produce that day. That is the mountain, and an operator who delivers a big line every week regardless of conditions is not managing risk, they are outsourcing it to you.

Filming, photography and the pressure it creates

Worth a short section, because it is a real and underdiscussed risk factor on freeride terrain.

Almost everyone arriving to ski big lines wants footage of it. That is entirely reasonable and we have no objection to it. But the presence of a camera changes group behaviour in ways worth naming: people ski faster than they intended, they ski lines they would otherwise have declined, they take second runs on terrain that warranted one, and, the specific one, they stop in exposed places to get the shot.

The literature on accident causation is consistent about this category of factor. Social pressure, commitment to a plan, and the desire not to be the person who backed out are among the most reliably identified contributors to bad decisions in avalanche terrain, and a camera amplifies every one of them.

What we do about it: filming positions get chosen with the same care as regroup points, and "we're not stopping there" applies to camera positions as much as to anywhere else. And if a group's ambition visibly changes when the camera comes out, we say so.

None of this is a reason not to film. It is a reason to notice that you are, and to make the terrain decision first and the shot decision second.

Is Gulmarg good for freeride skiing?

Yes. Gulmarg offers lift-accessed freeride terrain from 3,980 m with sustained steep pitch, descents up to roughly 1,300 vertical metres, and far less traffic than European freeride destinations, which means lines stay untracked for days.

How steep is the skiing in Gulmarg?

Do I need a guide for freeride skiing in Gulmarg?

What's the biggest vertical descent available?

Roughly 1,300 m from the Apharwat upper station to the base. The Drang descent is longer again in total vertical but finishes away from the resort and requires a pickup.

Is the terrain avalanche-controlled?

No, not across most of what freeride skiers want to ski. There is no routine control work above the gondola. See Avalanche Safety.

Can I ski Shark Fin?

Conditions and ability permitting, and not on your first day. It is the steepest line here and we ski it with groups we know on days the snowpack justifies it.

What skis should I bring for Gulmarg freeride?

100 mm+ underfoot with enough stiffness for variable snow. Bring one pair that handles everything rather than a dedicated powder ski, unless you can carry two.

How does Gulmarg freeride compare to Chamonix or Verbier?

Comparable in terrain scale and vertical, drier snow, dramatically less traffic, and dramatically less infrastructure. There is no equivalent of the Chamonix rescue apparatus here, and that changes the risk calculus more than any terrain difference does.

What's the difference between a freeride day and a backcountry day here?

Emphasis, mostly. A freeride day is built around specific lines and pitch; a backcountry day is built around terrain and vertical. Both use the same guides, the same equipment and the same mountain. If you want to ski named steep lines, book the former; if you want maximum untracked vertical, book the latter.

How many people in a freeride group?

Lower than for open-terrain days, because one-at-a-time skiing on steep lines makes larger groups slow and cold.

Is freeride skiing in Gulmarg suitable for a strong intermediate?

The open faces off the ridge, yes, with a guide. The named steep lines, not initially. The progression described above is realistic inside a week for most strong intermediates, and attempting to skip it is how weeks go badly.

What time of year is best for freeride?
