Powder Skiing in Gulmarg

The reason people fly to Kashmir rather than the Alps is that Gulmarg gets deep snow and has almost nobody to ski it with. On a good week you can ride untracked lines four days after the storm ended. That does not happen in Chamonix.

The most reliable window for powder in Gulmarg is mid-January to late February. December is building. Early March can be superb and can equally be spring. April is spring skiing, which has its own pleasures but is not what you fly here for.

That is the short answer, and if it's all you came for you can stop reading. The rest of this page explains the mechanism behind it, because understanding why the window is when it is turns out to be the thing that lets you make good decisions when your trip doesn't line up neatly with the window.

How Kashmir gets its snow

Gulmarg's snow arrives with Western Disturbances, extratropical low-pressure systems that form over or track east off the Mediterranean and the Caspian, cross Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan, and hit the Pir Panjal range. They are the dominant winter precipitation mechanism for the whole of the western Himalaya, and they behave nothing like the Pacific storm trains that feed Japan and the North American west, or the Atlantic systems that feed the Alps.

The defining characteristic is that they come in cycles rather than steadily: several days of storm, then a long clear high-pressure spell, then another storm. A Gulmarg season is not a slow accumulation. It is a series of large deposits separated by periods of nothing.

That pattern shapes everything about how you ski here.

Storm days are often the best days on the hill and the emptiest. Visibility is poor high up, so we ski the trees and lower-angle terrain around Monkey Hill and Babareshi. Most visitors write these days off and sit in their hotels. That is a mistake, and it is a mistake that leaves the mountain to whoever didn't make it.

The first clear day after a storm is the one everyone waits for. It is also the day with the highest fresh-snow instability, which is when guiding matters most. Blue sky and a metre of new snow is the most seductive and most consistently dangerous combination in mountain skiing anywhere in the world, and Gulmarg is no exception.

Days two through five after a storm are where Gulmarg earns its reputation. Because the mountain is so lightly skied, north and east aspects hold cold, soft snow long after they'd be tracked out anywhere in Europe or North America. This is the window that genuinely does not exist at comparable resorts, and it is the reason a seven-day trip here beats a seven-day trip almost anywhere else in powder terms.

The long clear spell is where the seasonal story gets complicated. Sustained clear cold weather is beautiful, and it is also building weak faceted layers near the snow surface, layers that the next storm will load. What the cycle means for a seven-day trip

Worth working through concretely, because it changes how you should feel about the forecast you see two weeks out.

A typical core-season week contains something like: one to three days of storm, one clear day immediately after it, three to four days of settled weather with progressively more tracked snow on the obvious lines, and, if you're lucky, the beginning of a second cycle.

The storm days. Trees and lower-angle terrain, flat light, empty mountain, excellent skiing for anyone willing to go out. Two of these in a week is a gift, not a loss.

The first clear day. Spectacular and the most instability-loaded day of the cycle. The best skiing of the week is available on it, on the right terrain. The worst decisions of the week are also available on it.

Days two to four. The heart of it. The snow has settled, the obvious lines have some tracks, and the aspects that hold, north and north-east, are still excellent. This is the window that does not exist at busier resorts, and it is why Gulmarg rewards a longer trip disproportionately.

Days five onward without new snow. The alpine gets progressively more tracked on the popular lines, and the value of a guide goes up rather than down, because finding untracked snow late in a cycle is a knowledge problem rather than a fitness one. The implication for booking: a week that contains no new snow at all is still a good week here, provided you have someone who knows where the old snow is hiding. That is not true at most destinations, and it is the strongest single argument for a guided trip in a low-snow spell.

Where powder actually holds

Aspect matters more than altitude here. That is worth stating explicitly because it inverts the assumption most visitors arrive with, which is that higher is always colder and therefore better.

North and north-east, The Back and the shaded ridge terrain hold dry snow longest. If it's been five days since the last storm, this is where we go. These aspects are the entire reason a late-in-the-cycle week can still be excellent.

East, Good early-morning snow that goes off with the sun. Ski it first, not last. An east-facing line that is perfect at 9:30am is a different surface at noon, and by the following morning it is a crust.

South and south-west, Sun-affected fast. Fine on the day, crusted by the day after. We ski these on storm days when the flat light makes the high north faces unusable, which is a useful inversion: the aspects that are worst in clear weather are often the right answer in bad weather, because the light is better on them and the snow hasn't been baked.

West, The afternoon aspect. Holds better than south, goes off later in the day, and is often the correct last-run-of-the-day choice.

Below the treeline, the Babareshi drainage and the tree skiing around it protect snow from wind and sun better than anything in the alpine. Underrated, and the answer on most bad-visibility days. Trees also give you the visual reference that makes skiing in flat light possible at all.

The wind story, which nobody mentions. Aspect determines sun. Wind determines where the snow ends up. On the Apharwat ridge, wind moves an enormous amount of snow, stripping the windward side and loading the lee. A leeward feature can be excellent skiing and can also be the loaded slope that's been building all week. Reading which is which on a given day is not something a visitor can do from a hotel window, and it is a large part of what you are hiring.

Timing a trip you can't reschedule

Most people book flights months out and get whatever the mountain gives them. Two things improve the odds, and one thing changes what "good" means.

Book seven days minimum. A four-day trip is a coin flip. Seven days in the mid-January to late-February window almost always contains at least one storm cycle. Ten days is meaningfully better again, because it usually contains two.

Stay flexible about what you ski. Groups who arrive with a fixed list of runs have a worse week than groups who arrive wanting good snow. The mountain decides. Every operator says this; the difference is whether the group actually believes it by day three.

Redefine what a good day is. The single biggest determinant of how a Gulmarg week is remembered is not snowfall. It is whether the group understood, before arriving, that a storm day skiing trees in flat light is a good day. Groups who arrive believing only bluebird powder counts have four disappointing days and three good ones. Groups who understand the cycle have seven good ones.

Month by month

December, Building. The base is establishing, coverage on the upper mountain can be thin early, and the lower drainages may not be filled in yet. Genuinely good storms happen in December and there are far fewer people. It is a gamble with a real upside.

January, The month tips through the middle. The first half is variable; from mid-January the base is generally established and the cold is reliable. Late January is the beginning of the core.

February, The core. Deepest base, coldest snow, most reliable storm cycles, and the highest concentration of the days people come here for. It is also the busiest, which in Gulmarg terms still means a mountain that is empty by any European standard.

March, A month of two mountains. North aspects can hold winter snow well into March and ski superbly. South and west aspects go spring on a schedule you can almost set a watch by. Early March is frequently excellent; late March is spring skiing with occasional winter days inserted.

April, Spring. Corn snow on the sunny aspects if you time the morning right, slush by afternoon, and a genuinely pleasant way to ski if that's what you came for. It is not a powder trip.

What deep snow here actually skis like

Worth setting expectations, because "powder" describes a range of surfaces and Gulmarg produces most of them.

High on the mountain in a cold storm cycle, the snow is genuinely dry and light, comparable to a good interior-continental snowpack rather than a maritime one. Lower down, and particularly in a warmer Western Disturbance, it can be considerably denser. Both can happen on the same descent, which is why the ski that floats beautifully at 3,800 m may feel overwhelmed by 3,100 m.

The other thing visitors notice is the volume relative to the traffic. In Europe, a 40 cm storm produces a rush and is skied out by noon. Here, a 40 cm storm produces a mountain where you can pick lines for several days. The scarcity is not the snow. The scarcity is people.

How Gulmarg compares to the other places people consider

Visitors choosing a powder trip are usually deciding between Japan, western Canada, and somewhere in the Alps. The honest comparison, including where Gulmarg loses:

Against Japan. Japan wins on reliability, Hokkaido's snowfall is close to a sure thing, and the volume is extraordinary. Gulmarg wins on terrain scale, on vertical, and on drier snow high up. Japan's tree skiing is world-class and Gulmarg's is good rather than exceptional. Japan's infrastructure works; Gulmarg's is thin. If your priority is being certain of deep snow, Japan is the safer booking.

Against western Canada. Canada wins comprehensively on infrastructure, on avalanche forecasting, on rescue, and on the professionalism of the guiding industry as a whole. Gulmarg wins on price and on emptiness. A guided week here costs a fraction of a comparable Canadian week, and the terrain sees a fraction of the traffic.

Against the Alps. The Alps win on access, lifts, food, and the ability to have a great holiday even in a bad snow year. Gulmarg wins decisively on untracked snow. A good Alpine off-piste line is skied out within hours of a storm. The equivalent here holds for days. That single difference is the reason most people who come once come back.

Where Gulmarg genuinely leads. Vertical per rupee, untracked terrain per skier, and the specific experience of skiing high alpine terrain in the Himalaya with almost nobody else on it. Those are real advantages and they are not available at the same price anywhere else.

Where it genuinely lags. Safety infrastructure, rescue timelines, avalanche forecasting, and the consistency of the lift operation. Those are the honest costs of the advantages above, and they are the reason the guiding decision matters more here.

How we choose the first run on a powder morning

The most consequential decision of a powder day is made before anyone leaves the base, and it is worth explaining because it is the visible part of what guiding buys.

What fell, and at what temperature. New snow depth is the headline number and the least useful one on its own. What matters is whether the new snow bonded to what was underneath it, and that depends on what the old surface was, sun crust, faceted sugar, wind board, or a soft settled layer, and on whether the storm arrived warm and finished cold, or the reverse. A storm that starts cold and finishes warm builds an upside-down layer that behaves badly. A storm that starts warm and finishes cold usually doesn't.

What the wind did with it. Twenty centimetres of new snow with strong ridge-top wind is not a 20 cm problem. It's a 60 cm problem on the lee features and no problem at all on the scoured windward side. Deciding which features have been loaded is the single most important judgement of the morning.

What we saw yesterday. Yesterday's observations, from our own guides on our own terrain, carry more weight than any forecast. This is the compounding advantage of an operator that skis here every day of the season rather than arriving for a fortnight.

Where the group is, physically and psychologically. Day one of a trip, a strong group and a stable snowpack produce a different first run from day five with three tired people and the same snowpack.

The output of that reasoning is a first descent, a second option, and a line we've decided we're not skiing today. We say all three out loud at the morning briefing. Clients who pay attention to that reasoning across a week leave able to do a version of it on their home mountain, which is the durable part of what a guided trip gives you.

Skiing this snow well

A short technical note, because the snow here rewards a slightly different approach from what most visitors bring.

It is deeper than you're calibrated for. Skiers arriving from Europe are usually good at skiing 20–30 cm of new snow over a firm base. A metre of accumulated cold snow over a soft base is a different medium: the ski is working in three dimensions, the base is not providing a platform, and the instinct to lean back, which works for a turn or two, ends the day early.

Speed is your friend up to a point, and then it isn't. You need enough speed to keep the tips planing. You do not need the speed that removes your ability to stop before a terrain feature you can't see.

Pitch matters more than usual. In deep snow, a slope that is a fraction too shallow becomes exhausting and a slope that is a fraction too steep becomes a sluff-management problem. Part of the guide's job on a deep day is picking pitch, not just aspect.

Sluff management is a real skill here. In deep cold snow on sustained pitch, the snow you release moves with you. Skiing to the side of your own sluff, and knowing where to stop so that it passes you rather than arrives with you, is a technique visitors often haven't needed at home.

Fatigue arrives differently. Deep-snow skiing is far more physically demanding than piste skiing at the same vertical. Four thousand vertical metres of powder is a much bigger day than four thousand vertical metres of groomed skiing, and pacing for it is the difference between a good day six and a wasted one.

Does Gulmarg get more snow than the Alps?

Comparing seasonal totals between ranges is less useful than comparing snow per skier. Gulmarg's advantage is not primarily volume; it is that very few people are skiing whatever falls.

When does the season start and end?

Broadly mid-December to early April, with the reliable core from mid-January to late February. Lift operations at either end depend on conditions and on the gondola's own schedule.

What is the deepest month?

February, on base depth. March can deliver individual storms as large as any in the season, but on top of a base that is beginning to change on sunny aspects.

Should I book around a forecast?

Not usefully. Western Disturbances are not reliably forecast far enough ahead to book flights around. Book the window, then be flexible about what you ski within it.
