Gulmarg Backcountry Ski Packages

Read what these lengths involve, day by day: 10-day backcountry ski or 14-day backcountry ski.

This is the most demanding package we run and the one with the shortest list of people it suits.

Seven to ten nights, accommodation and meals, airport transfers, equipment, lift access, and guided days on unmanaged terrain beyond the resort with an AIARE-certified guide. Optional touring days for skin-access objectives.

It differs from a Powder Package in three ways that matter: the ability requirement is higher, the guide-to-client ratios are lower, and the days are longer and more committing.

For what the terrain actually is, Backcountry Skiing in Gulmarg covers it and this page won't.

Who this package is for

The most important section on the page, and the one we'd rather over-state than under-state.

You should be: a genuinely competent off-piste skier or rider. Confident and controlled on steep ungroomed terrain in variable snow, not just in good powder. Able to ski four to six thousand vertical metres in a day, several days running, at altitude.

You should own or be comfortable using: a transceiver, shovel and probe. We issue all three, but issued equipment and practised equipment are different things.

You should ideally have: an AIARE 1 or equivalent avalanche course. Not required, the guide carries the decision-making, but it changes what you get out of the week and what you can contribute if something happens to somebody else.

This is not for you if: you are a strong piste skier who has skied a little soft snow. That is a real and common profile and it is well served by a Powder Package or by Advanced Ski Lessons, both of which will produce a better week than this one would.

We will tell you at the quoting stage if we think this is the wrong package for you, including when that costs us the more expensive booking. A group whose weakest member is below backcountry standard gets guided on terrain the strongest members find unremarkable, which satisfies nobody and is the most common way a backcountry week disappoints.

Ratios, and why this package is structured differently

The thing that most distinguishes this package from a powder week, and the reason it is arranged the way it is.

On open, moderate terrain a larger group works, everyone skis, the guide can see everyone, the pace is set by the group's middle. On committing terrain a large group is a problem in itself: people wait in the cold at exposed regroup points, only one person can be on a slope at a time, and moving eight people safely through a line takes long enough to change what is achievable in a day.

So backcountry packages run lower ratios than powder packages. That is not a marketing distinction attached to the word "backcountry", it is a direct consequence of how the terrain has to be skied, and it is the single biggest structural difference between the two products.

Trip length: why we recommend ten nights

The one genuine upsell on this page, and it's an honest one.

Weather here works in multi-day cycles. A seven-night booking gives you five or six skiing days, which is enough to catch a cycle but not enough to catch a cycle and be positioned for the days after it, which are frequently the best days for this kind of skiing.

A ten-night booking gives you eight or so skiing days. That is usually enough to contain a full storm cycle plus the settled period afterward, and it is enough that a two-day weather write-off doesn't define the trip.

If ten is not possible, seven works. Four does not, and we would rather say so than sell it.

Getting a quote

This package is built around your group, not sold off a shelf, so a quote follows a conversation. On this one in particular that conversation matters, because the ability question genuinely determines what the week can be.

What we need from you: your dates or window, group size, an honest and specific description of each person's off-piste experience, whether anyone holds an avalanche qualification, how many days you want guided, whether you want touring days, and accommodation preference.

Be specific about experience. "Four of us ski off-piste regularly in the Alps and two have AIARE 1" tells us a great deal. "We're all experienced" tells us nothing and, on this package more than any other, produces a week that has to be renegotiated on day two.

What shapes it: trip length first, see below on ten nights, then group size and ratio, then how many days are guided, then accommodation, then whether touring days or heli days are included.

Equipment

Included: skis or snowboard, boots, poles, helmet, and transceiver, shovel and probe issued daily.

Bring your own if you have it: boots that fit, and a transceiver you have personally practised with. Practised beats new.

Touring equipment is not included and is required for touring days: tech or frame bindings, skins cut to your skis, a boot with a walk mode, and ski crampons if you have them.

Airbag packs available from our ski shop.

Spares matter more on this package. Skin glue fails in cold, binding screws back out, and there is no touring-specific repair shop in Gulmarg. Bring a multi-tool, spare screws, ski straps and tape.

Insurance

The package where this matters most, so read the wording rather than the marketing.

Standard travel policies frequently exclude off-piste skiing outside resort boundaries, and many exclude it entirely without a qualified guide. All the skiing on this package is outside any resort boundary as a European insurer would define one.

Check specifically for: the off-piste definition and whether it depends on a boundary; whether a qualified guide is required for cover; helicopter evacuation as its own line item, and its cap; any altitude ceiling, 4,000 m ceilings exist and would exclude the top of this mountain; repatriation; and any exclusion applying to Jammu & Kashmir.

Resolve ambiguity in writing before you buy, and bring the documents. Full detail on Off-Piste Skiing.

What we expect from you, and what you should expect from us

Published because a backcountry package is more of a two-way arrangement than a hotel booking.

From you at booking: an accurate description of your ability, not a modest or an aspirational one. Fitness and altitude history. Medical conditions, medication and previous serious injury. Whether you own and have practised with a transceiver. What you're hoping to do.

From you on the hill: willingness to be assessed on day one, and acceptance that terrain choices are the guide's. Groups arriving with a fixed list of runs consistently have worse weeks than groups arriving wanting good skiing.

From us: the plan and its reasoning stated out loud every morning, alternatives named before they're needed, turnaround times set in advance, and an honest answer when the answer is that we're not skiing that today.

Refunds. Not given for weather, conditions, or a guide's decision to ski different terrain than you hoped. The day changes instead, that is the service, not a failure of it.

Accommodation

Two considerations weigh differently on this package than on the others.

Distance to the gondola matters more, because your days start earlier. Backcountry days begin before the queue, and a fifteen-minute boot walk at 07:30 in the dark is a worse start than it sounds.

Drying and storage matter more. Seven to ten days of hard skiing generates a lot of wet equipment, and a room with nowhere to dry boots and skins is a genuine problem by day four.

Meals timing. Early starts mean early breakfast, sometimes earlier than a hotel's standard service. We arrange it; it's worth knowing it has to be arranged.

Getting here, and why the buffer matters more on this trip

The travel logistics are the same as any Gulmarg trip, fly to Srinagar, 1.5 to 2 hours by road, transfers included and timed to your flights, but two points bite harder on a longer, more committing trip.

Your arrival day is a travel day and your first ski day is an assessment day. So a seven-night booking gives you roughly four days of the skiing you came for. This is the arithmetic that most often disappoints people on this package, and it is the strongest argument for ten nights.

Build a real buffer before your outbound flight. Road closures during heavy snow are a genuine possibility, and this is the package most likely to have you at the far end of a long day late in the trip. We schedule the return transfer with margin and we would recommend against a same-day international connection out of Delhi.

Add-ons

Touring days, swap a lift-served day for skin access. See Ski Touring.

Extra guided days or nights, both can be added; tell us at the quoting stage.

Airbag pack rental, available from our ski shop.

A rest day with a lift pass, worth building into a ten-night trip deliberately rather than discovering you need one on day six.

If something goes wrong

The logistics, which is a package question. The hazard itself is covered on Avalanche Safety and is not repeated here.

Someone can't ski a day. Accommodation, meals and transfers continue.

An evacuation from remote terrain. This is why helicopter evacuation cover is worth confirming in writing before you fly.

Lost or damaged rental equipment, including issued safety equipment.

Who to call. One number, ours, throughout, +91-9596300570. On a trip involving remote descents and vehicle pickups, having one accountable operator rather than three subcontractors is not a marketing point, it is the practical difference on a bad day.

Day by day

  • Day 0, arrival. arrival

Srinagar transfer, check in, equipment fitting, transceiver issue. Briefing over dinner: the week's plan, the conditions picture, your group, and what we need to know about each of you.

  • Day 1, assessment, deliberately unambitious. assessment, deliberately unambitious

Beacon check, an assessment run on low-consequence terrain, and lift-served skiing while the guide builds a picture of how the group actually moves. Also acclimatisation, which matters more on this package than any other because of what days three onward ask.

Groups push against this day every season. It is the day that determines what the rest of the week can be.

  • Days 2–3, building. building

Progressively more committing terrain as the guide's picture improves and as the group acclimatises.

  • Days 4–6, the core. the core

The bigger objectives, if the snowpack and the group allow. This is where a long trip pays for itself: a ten-night booking has more chances of catching the right conditions for a big day than a seven-night one does.

Optional touring days can be substituted from day 3 onwards. Requires touring equipment, see Ski Touring for what those days are.

  • Final day, departure, with a deliberate buffer for weather and road conditions. departure, with a deliberate buffer for weather and road conditions

Why there is no fixed run list. Because the objective is chosen against the snowpack on the morning, and no honest operator can tell you in October which line you will ski in February. Some weeks produce a big day. Some don't. An operator who delivers the flagship descent every week regardless of conditions is not managing risk, they are transferring it to you. That reasoning is set out on Our Guides.

That last row is worth noticing. Descents that finish away from the resort require a vehicle at the bottom and someone who knows where you're going. It is arranged in advance as part of the package rather than improvised, and it is one of the practical things that separates a package from a day rate.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get a quote for a backcountry package?

Call or WhatsApp +91-9596300570 with your dates, group size and a specific description of each person's off-piste experience. This package is built around the group rather than sold as a fixed product, so the quote follows a conversation.

What's included?

Accommodation with breakfast and dinner, Srinagar transfers, equipment, lift passes, guided days with an AIARE-certified guide at backcountry ratios, avalanche safety equipment, and transport for descents finishing away from the resort. Flights, insurance, lunch and touring equipment are not included.

How good do I need to be?

Genuinely competent off-piste, confident on steep ungroomed terrain in variable snow, not just in good powder, with the fitness for 4,000–6,000 vertical metres a day. If that's not you yet, book a powder package.

Do I need my own avalanche gear?

No, transceiver, shovel and probe are issued daily. Bring your own if you own one and have practised with it.

Do I need an avalanche course?

Not required. Strongly recommended, and it changes what you get out of the week.

How long should I book?

Ten nights if you can; seven works. Four does not, you lose two days to travel and gamble the rest on one weather window.

Do I need touring equipment?

Only for touring days, which are optional. All lift-served backcountry days work on standard alpine gear.

Can splitboarders book this?

Yes, throughout. See Snowboard Guides.

What if the snowpack doesn't allow the big objectives?

Then we ski something else and say so. Some weeks produce a flagship day and some don't. An operator who guarantees one regardless of conditions is guaranteeing something they don't control.

Is travel insurance required?

Yes, and it must cover off-piste skiing outside resort boundaries and, ideally, helicopter evacuation. Check the altitude ceiling too.

Can we book as a private group?

Yes, and it's the most common way this package is booked.

Can my partner come without skiing?

Yes, accommodation, meals and transfers without the skiing components. Bear in mind this package involves long days, so a non-skiing partner will see less of you than on a powder week.

Do you cater for dietary requirements?

Yes, with notice at booking. Early breakfasts are arranged around the day's start time.

How is this different from a powder package?

Higher ability requirement, lower guide-to-client ratios, longer and more committing days, transport arranged for remote exits, and optional touring days. The ratio is most of the difference.
